A bail of R10,000 has been granted to ANC Councillor – Andile Lungisa.
On Friday, Judge Sunil Rugunanan delivered the order in the high court in Makhanda. The implication of this is that he would be granted freedom from prison until there’s an outcome of his application for leave to appeal to the Constitutional Court.
“If I were to refuse bail and the application for leave to appeal is successful, whenever that may be, then the applicant will be deprived of his freedom unnecessarily and the interests of justice will not be served.”
“If, however, bail is granted and leave to appeal fails, then he will inevitably proceed to serve his sentence,” the judge said.
Back in 2018, Lungisa was convicted for an assault towards DA Councillor – Kano Kayser during a controversial brawl in 2016.
Apparently, Lungisa smashed a glass jug on Kayser’s head, which resulted to an effective two years’ imprisonment.
