Members of Parliament congratulated Tsakani Maluleke, who has been appointed to take over the role of the Auditor-General.
She is the first woman in the country to head the Chapter 9 institution.
Her appointment was unanimously agreed upon by the ad hoc committee established to recruit the country’s next Auditor General.
After Kimi Makwetu’s seven-year term as the Auditor General comes to an end in November, Maluleke will take over.
Maluleke was interviewed alongside six chartered accountants for this position.
The MPs confirmed that they were pleased with her selection as she was the best candidate for the job.
African National Congress (ANC) MP Sfiso Buthelezi said “I’m there proposing Honourable chair that this ad hoc committee accept that Ms Tsakani Maluleke was the best of the best of the candidates that we interviewed”.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Jan de Villiers was also pleased with the recommendation, saying Maluleke had the necessary public finance management and audit experience.
De Villiers said: “It gives me great pleasure to concur with all the recommendations of my colleagues made thus far and support Ms Tsakani Maluleke for the appointment of the new Auditor-General of South Africa.”
Freedom Front Plus (FF+) MP Wouter Wessels said “Ms Maluleke was definitely in my view the most suitable candidate.”
The National Assembly is expected to meet on Tuesday to adopt the committee’s recommendation.
