The fitness and diet trend is getting more widespread by the day.

Although a lot of people just want great pictures for #TransformationTuesdays, others have come to realise and understand the importance of healthy living.

It is said a lot that weight loss is 30% exercise and 70% diet. But it seems a lot of people who follow diet routines get some things wrong.

So here are 6 factors to keep in mind when you start your diet.

1. Eat more often

No I am not asking you to eat waakye in the morning, kenkey in the afternoon and check-check in the evening. Large meals burden the digestive system often causing bloating and lowered energy while the body struggles to digest the food. To avoid this try eating smaller meals and intermittently having fruits before your major meals to help the body to function more efficiently throughout the day.

2. Consume fish for a healthy heart

Fish is very high in protein and extremely low in calories. Fish also contains omega 3 fatty acids that remove excess fats in the blood. So look at having more fish in your diet. Some people do not like fish or don’t take it at all. For you fish hating people, you can look at having lean meat and chicken breast to still be in the diet race.

3. Drink plenty water

Water helps maintain the balance of body fluids and energize muscles. It flushes out all toxins in your kidney and helps maintain normal bowel function. It keeps the skin healthy and helps control calories. It prevents too much eating especially when you drink water before having your meal.

4. Increase the Intake of calcium

Calcium is essential for strong bones and teeth. It also has slimming effects on the metabolism of an individual to keep you slim and trim. High calcium foods include cheese, low fat milk, leafy greens and fish canned with their bones.

5. Regular intake of Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamins and Minerals are essential for every diet. They help prevent health problems such as cancer and heart diseases. Get these from potatoes, beef liver, sweet red pepper etc.

6. Avoid processed food consumption

Processed foods such as instant noodles, flavoured nuts and microwave popcorn are very high in sugar. They increase cholesterol level and increase fat accumulation. Regular consumption of processed foods are associated with diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cancer.
