1. Digestive issues

You must have heard that chia seeds are great for digestion and gut health as they are packed with dietary fibers. The concentration of fibers in chia seeds is very high, which is beneficial only if it is taken in moderation. Yes, excessive intake of chia seeds can lead to digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, bloating and stomach ache. Over a period of time excessive intake of fiber can worsen gut health. Thus, it is advised to take around 1 ½ tablespoon twice a day or around 20-25 grams along with an ample intake of water. In case of conditions like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) it is best to stay hydrated if you are adding chia seeds to the daily diet.

This may sound unbelievable, but as they say too much of anything can be harmful for health. Chia seeds are a rich source of plant based protein and omega 3 fatty acids, which is great for health. But an excessive intake of omega3 rich foods may lead to thinning of blood.

Especially, if someone is on blood pressure medication, which causes blood thinning and addition of chia seeds can worsen and reduce blood pressure levels. In such cases it is advised to take a minimum permissible amount of chia seeds.

Chia seeds hail from the mint family, so in case you are allergic to mint or related foods. Make sure you avoid the intake of chia seeds as it may lead to allergies, vomiting, diarrhea, itching of the lips and tongue.

4. Effects sugar level in the body

The dietary fiber in chia seeds can slow down the process of digestion of food and absorption of macronutrients, including sugars.This has a positive effect on blood sugar levels in the body. However, if you are on a blood sugar medication, then there are chances that this can interfere with the sugar levels as well as insulin resistance of the body.

5. Causes discomfort for pregnant women

Adding chia seeds to your diet during pregnancy can help in boosting metabolism and improving digestion. However, the excessive intake of protein and fiber chia seeds can often trigger constipation, bloating, diarrhea and frequent urination, which may cause discomfort to the expecting mom. Thus, do consult your doctor before adding this super seed to your diet.
