What’s more intense than the preceding a job interview? The long wait and uncertainty that follows after the interview, right?
Sadly, no recruiter would give an applicant prompt feedback. In fact, most interviewers never get in touch with the candidates after an interview, if they aren’t selected. That’s a sad truth.
Nothing can fully ensure whether an applicant got selected or not unless it comes from the horse’s mouth, which in this case is the interviewer or the HR personnel of the concerned organisation.
However, here are some comforting signs that will help to ease the tension about the uncertainty after an interview.
1. When the conversational turns casual
If the conversation during the interview turns casual, this might be a good sign. When you work in a team, it’s really important for the manager or the company to know more about you besides your professional skills. When you talk about casual things or your likes and dislikes, the kind of books you read, etc., this allows your interviewer to think of you in relation to how you will fit in their work environment.
2. Being randomly introduced to other team members
As the interview progresses, if the interviewer talks about other team members and you are randomly introduced to them, take this as a good sign. This means the interviewer likes you and wants to know the opinion of other team members without making it obvious to all.
3. Pay attention to the words like ‘when’ and ‘if’
No interviewers would ever give false hopes to the candidates so, they would use words carefully to ensure that. For example, the use of words like ‘if’ and ‘when’ can speak volumes. When the interviewer says, “If you get hired, we will inform you…”, he or she is trying to generalise things. But if they start something like, “When you get hired you might have to complete this training…”, this might mean they are trying to give you an idea of what happens after getting selected. So, their choice of words, when analysed properly, can give away big hints.
4. Talks about the good things the job will offer
When there is a change in direction in the discussion from knowing about you to letting you know about the perks the job will offer, it means the interviewer is now trying to ‘sell’ the job. If you hear him or her saying, “This role allows employees to strike a good work-life balance” or “We have some amazing training programmes for employees to hone their skills”, it means the interview is definitely going in the right direction.
5. When the interview runs longer than expected
Don’t be disappointed if the interview runs longer than expected. This does not mean the interviewers were not happy with your answers and that’s why they were asking more questions. On the contrary, the reason for the interview spilling over the prescribed time might be because the interviewers really like what they heard and wanted to know more!
6. Prompt response to follow up mails
It’s a common practice to send a thank you mail to the interviewer or the contact person after the interview, which means they will receive numerous emails from the candidates. Now, while replying, in case they do reply, they will prioritise the short-listed candidates, right? Therefore, getting a prompt reply, even though it might not mean much, to follow-up emails is a positive sign.
However, nothing is confirmed unless it’s confirmed!
But let us tell you, it’s wise not to raise your hope unless you get a confirmation letter because anything can happen at the last minute. Never lose hope if you do not get selected even after doing really well in the interview. You can always take feedback from the interviewer to learn what went wrong and work on doing better next time.
