Before the research started the team gathered data about the participants’ diet, activities, medical history, medications, and other health-related factors.

The findings

The study found that those who drank a moderate amount of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who refrained. Also, those who drank only 2 glasses of wine or beer a day decreased chances of premature death by 18%. And the consumption of two cups of coffee per day decreased death chances by 10%.

Though, till date, nothing has been documented, but experts feel that drinking coffee possibly increases focus and alertness and adds another couple of years to your life. Also, it is believed that moderate alcohol consumption keeps the immune system at ease and increase life expectancy.

How much to drink?

According to experts, ‘moderate’ is the key. The American Association for the Advancement of Science says that two cups of coffee a day is moderate. And the same rule applies for alcohol too and in case of beer, it can be two bottles.

What’s more?

This is not the first time that alcohol and coffee have been linked to increasing life expectancy. Earlier also, they have been linked to the ability to slow the growth of prostate cancer, overall improved heart health, and a reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease.
