Eight people have been reported injured after attackers threw stones at six Sibanye buses on Tuesday morning.
The buses were stoned in the Witsand area of Atlantis in the Western Cape.
Those injured included seven passengers and a driver of one of the buses.
However, the injured ones were treated for minor injuries.
Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, spokesperson for Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS), which owns Sibanye suspects that the attackers were sent by taxi operators.
“The attacks are linked to taxi operators in the area as we have been intimidated repeatedly and quite openly and told that we should not operate in the area,”
“The SA Police Service and law enforcement have been made aware of the threats. This is outright criminality and the authorities must take swift action against the perpetrators,” she added.
The buses which the people of Atlantis rely on as a means of transportation to and fro the city every day had their windows shattered.
The City of Cape Town’s transport portfolio committee member, Councillor Angus McKenzie “strongly condemned the stoning”.
He appealed to the law enforcement agencies to act quickly. He explained that people who use buses do not do so as a luxury.
However, GABS is offering a R200 000 reward for any information which will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators including video footage of perpetrators that set five of their buses on fire in recent arson attacks.
