The court has granted bail to the former African National Congress MP Vincent Smith.

Smith was granted bail of R30,000 by the Palm Ridge Magistrates court.

He is currently facing charges of fraud and corruption related to state capture.

Earlier this year, he appeared before the Zondo Commission where he was questioned about the R800,000 which Bosasa gave to him.

Following investigations, Smith surrendered himself to the Hawks at the Alberton Police Station on Thursday morning.

He later appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court for bail application.

His lawyers told the court that Smith was not a flight risk and would not interfere with any of the witnesses.

They also argued that the justice would not be interested in keeping Smith behind bars which the judge agreed with.

Also, the State did not oppose bail.

It stated that it was of no use putting Smith behind bars pending his trial.

He is expected to return to court on 14 October.
