South Africa is set to purchase more megawatts of solar and wind power.

This decision was made known by the Minister of Energy, Gwede Mantashe.

He announced that it is officially confirmed that the government has the intention of purchasing 6,800 megawatts of solar and wind power.

It would be procured from the independent power producers from 2022.

Mantashe made this known in the online government gazette on Friday.

“6,800 megawatts (MW) should be procured to be generated from renewable energy sources (PV and Wind)… for the years 2022 to 2024,” Mantashe said in the release.

PV stands for photo voltaic, it is also referred to as solar power.

He also revealed that South Africa will purchase 3,000 megawatts of gas-generated electricity and 1,500 megawatts will be generated by coal.

Mantashe further added that Eskom must purchase these electricity from independent power producers (IPPs).

Also, programmes will target connection to the grid as soon as reasonably possible.
