Community safety, security and liaison MEC Gabisile Shabalala on Tuesday confirmed that she was aware of the arrest of a government official in Mpumalanga who was accused of rape.

She said the news of the arrest came four days before the police arrested a former MEC in the province on the charges of rape.

“The department has noted the arrest of the [suspect] due to alleged rape on Thursday, September 24. He appeared in Ermelo magistrate’s court on Friday, September 25, where he was remanded in custody,” said Shabalala.

She said she wants the “law to take its course”.

The official who is in police custody is expected to be back in court on Friday.

The identity of the official is being withheld until he pleads to the sexual charge.

News of his arrest comes after a former MEC was arrested on Monday.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) the former MEC was arrested in Nelspruit alongside his stepson for allegedly raping his daughters.

The two accused appeared in court on Monday.

Their case was postponed to Thursday for bail application.

The accused identities are withheld in order to protect the identity of the alleged victims.
