In the early hours of Wednesday morning, two trucks had a head-on collision in an accident on the N1 between Beaufort West and Three Sisters.
However, four people have been pronounced dead, according to Ntomboxolo Makoba-Somdaka, spokesperson for Western Cape minister of transport and public works, Bonginkosi Madikizela.
Both vehicles were caught in fire, while the road remained temporarily closed.
Motorists suggested making use of the alternative route berdeen-Graaff Reinet-Murraysburg and back onto the N1.
Since then, a lane has been reopened.
