Lana Marks, United States ambassador to South Africa has expressed her concern about COVID-19 related corruption in the country.
Marks made an announcement at OR Tambo International Airport, speaking about personal protective donations worth R5.9 million to the South African government.
Reports have developed in recent weeks, about the corruption in the supply and tendering of PPE.
Quite a number of senior government officials have been implicated in the PPE scandals. These officials include Khusela Diko – presidential spokesperson, Bandile Masuku – Gauteng MEC for Health and his wife – Loyiso.
Lana mentioned that in order to avoid corruption, they would make sure that all PPE donations fall into clean hands – the beneficiaries.
“There has been corruption and it’s very disappointing. It does need to be overcome in South Africa. We’re delivering this to certain regions to the folks on the ground.”
There will be distribution of PPE donation to front line staff in rural areas and in provinces who have been massively hit by the coronavirus.
